Rebuilt Title Guide

Everything you need to know about rebuilt and salvage title vehicles before you buy.

What is a Salvage Title?

A salvage title means an insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss — usually because repair costs exceeded a percentage of the car's value (typically 75-80%). This can happen due to collision, flood, fire, hail, or theft recovery. The vehicle is NOT necessarily undriveable.

What is a Rebuilt Title?

A rebuilt (or reconstructed) title means the vehicle had a salvage title, was repaired, and passed a state inspection. It's now road-legal but the title permanently reflects its history. Rebuilt title vehicles typically sell for 20-40% less than clean title vehicles.

Pros & Cons
✓ Pros
  • Significantly lower price
  • Can be great value if repaired well
  • Same mechanical function when fixed properly
  • Good for parts or project cars
✗ Cons
  • Harder to insure (some insurers won't cover)
  • Lower resale value
  • Hidden damage may exist
  • Financing is difficult
Before You Buy — Checklist
  • Run a VIN history report (Carfax or AutoCheck)
  • Have an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle
  • Check your state's DMV requirements for rebuilt titles
  • Verify the title document matches the VIN
  • Call your insurance company first — not all will insure rebuilt titles
  • Check if financing is available for your situation
